The Road To Mandalay

Everything we've ever stolen
Has been lost, returned or broken
No more dragons left to slay
Every mistake I've ever made
Has been rehashed and then replayed
As I got lost along the way

The Road To Mandalay - Robbie Williams

Save me from drowning in the sea
Pick me up from the beach
What a lovely holiday
There's nothing funny left to say

This sombre song would drain the sun
But it won't shine until it's sung
No water running in the stream
The saddest place we've ever seen

Everything I touched was golden
Everything I loved got broken
On the road to Mandalay

Every mistake I've ever made
Has been rehashed and then replayed
As I got lost along the way

There's nothing left for you to give
The truth is all that you're left with
Twenty paces then at dawn
We will die and be reborn

I like to sleep beneath the trees
Have the universe at one with me
Look down the barrel of a gun
And feel the Moon replace the Sun

Everything we've ever stolen
Has been lost returned or broken
No more dragons left to slay

Every mistake I've ever made
Has been rehashed and then replayed
As I got lost along the way

Save me from drowning in the sea
Pick me up from the beach
What a lovely holiday
There's nothing funny left to say

Yes, this is a brilliant song. I simply love the words. And Robbie; although from a manufactured boy band, has most definitely earned his status as a fantastic songwriter and entertainer. The rest of Take That should really pack up and bugger off really. You should also check out Paul Weller. He was born and bred in Woking, Surrey and his songs 'That's entertainment' and 'A Town called Malice' are superb. The downside is that I think he looks a bit like Iggy pop! All the best.

englishrose,

Robbie turned out to be so much more talented than say, his counterpart, Gary Barlow.

In fact, in due time, he will stand tall in history side by side with biggies such as Elton John.

Yes, I am also familiar with Weller - who began The Jams and The Style Council.

And btw, do you know that he was a guest guitarist and backing vocalist on "Champagne Supernova" on Oasis's seminal album - "What's The Story, Morning Glory"?

Thanks!

Really? Wow, I didn't know that. Thanks! I shall rummage through my old CDs and scrutinise the fine print and have a good listen. Champagne Supernova is my fave number in that album, simply because it brings back memories (very funny ones though not so funny at the time!). Gary who? :)Oh yes, that Barlow fellow. He's such a soppy sad case with very predictable whingey tunes. And yes, I do agree that good ol' Rob is high up there. 'No Regrets' leaving Take That. In '05, he was given the honour of kick starting the Live8 concert. Simply amazing performance and Paul McCartney ended the day long concert with a Beatles' medley. Richard Ashcroft is yet another great talent. At that same concert, he decided to sing 'Bittersweet Symphony' with ColdPlay. Chris Martin was all smiles on his piano...but I must say that he could have done better with his choice in women. Gwyneth? But why?? And here I go again..

i am guessing that you are a brit. anyway, it would be great to know that you were there for the live8 concert. with all these great artistes, it must be really awesome to just be there!

you mentioned richard ashcroft ... and i thought at the back of my mind that he was gonna come to singapore for a concert - but when i double-checked, it was not to be. instead it was brett anderson (from suede). but yeah, bittersweet symphony is verve's The Song.

used to be big on coldplay but they kinda slide over their new album. and don't even begin about gwyneth: how could that woody performance ever won her an academy for shakespeare in love?!! that was one of the most upsetting oscars for me ... and don't forget, the wonderfully talented cate blanchett was nominated alongside her that year! what blasphemy it was!!!

you remembered the years when take that was huge? well, it was said that the band sustained itself due to barlow's singing alone? well, after going solo, his songs mirror take that 100%. no where compared to robbie.

check out the song chris martin wrote for embrace: gravity. simply cool...

Yeah, how could she have ever gotten Best Actress? Must have been some 'inside' thingy. But I have to say that I quite liked 'Sliding Doors' though, simply because John Hannah is a brilliant actor. Yes, the Live8. There was U2, Dido, Travis, Keane, UB40, Elton, The Corrs. Many many artistes except for the Kaiser Chiefs. Oh, if you like Blur (I love Country House), then you should check out Alex James' new autobiography 'A Bit of A Blur'. A funny and very easy read. He's changed from this ultra Britpop star to buying a farm in the country and owning 2000 sheep!

"sliding doors" is nice but i think "great expectations" is awesome ... what with ethan hawke ... ultra best! i normally dont favour modern remakes and i know charles dickens may rise from the grave ... but i simply love the movie .. with vanessa redgrave too.

anyway i was just wondering: are you my musical twin? how is it that someone so far away can have so similar a taste in his music and singers and bands all roll into one :-) I love those bands you mention, perhaps minus UB40 and the corrs :-p

Hmmm..yes perhaps we were separated at birth. You should be here at Glastonbury Live. Yes, I've always wondered how people can think alike, have the same tastes and all, and yet be miles and miles apart.

I've never seen Ethan Hawke in Great Expectations but I have read the book. Which means I've got to head for Blockbusters and get it now. Have you seen Lawrence Olivier in Pride and Prejudice? Hilarious. All the best, matey. P.S. Are you a Brit too, but only grew up in faraway shores?

TheHoopoe said...

sorry mate to disappoint: i am a singaporean who have dreams of going to england one day soon.

but i am seeing it coming so near now to make plans by the end of the year - depending on my work commitments.

anyway, you must really watch "great expectations". i'll refund your rental fees if you dont like it.

and yes, i have heard so much of Glasto! i mean - how can one not know of it with 700 live peformances throughout 2007 alone! how are the villagers of Pilton taking it with the noises and all?

its a pity they didnt have any last year. did you attend this year? just ended last week eh? tell me more ... transport me there ...

Do come. Maybe you would want to reunite with a certain twin sibling of yours. I'm a traveller too. It's so therapeutic. And when I don't travel physically, I'm drifting away mentally, in my books and songs...A dreamer. Yes, it was amazing (Glasto), but in the mud though (which made it even more special). Been pouring buckets. (But 'I'm only happy when it rains')

TheHoopoe said...

Yes... if we dont travel (physically or mentally) and remain begin to remain static ... then i think that's when we begin to die ...

"i'm only happy when it rains" - garbage? :-)
