A Letter To Elise

Ahhh ... Was told by a friend that the band, The Cure, may make its way to our shores within the year. I let slipped a grateful smile and am all excited now. I know that not many may listen to The Cure - but it was one of my most favourite band while I was living my 80's and 90's. Their songs were a backdrop of my life while I was in school.

The Cure are an English rock band formed in Crawley, Sussex in 1976, widely seen as one of the leading pioneers of the British alternative rock scene of the 1980s.

The Cure's first album in the late 70's placed them as part of the post-punk and New Wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom. During the early 80's the band's increasingly dark and tormented music helped form the gothic rock genre. With the 1982 single "Let's Go to Bed" Robert Smith (lead singer) began to inject more of a pop sensibility into the band's music. The Cure's popularity increased as the decade wore on, especially in the United States, where the songs "Just Like Heaven", "Lovesong" and "Friday I'm in Love" entered the Billboard Top 40 charts. By the start of the 90's, The Cure were one of the most popular alternative bands in the world, with an estimated 27 million albums sold as of 2004. As of 2007, The Cure have released twelve studio albums and over thirty singles, with a thirteenth album in the works.

If it was asked of me what is my favourite song from The Cure, it will be so difficult to choose. But if a choice was to be made, it will be this particular one ... but you will need to:

Switch off the lights, put on your earphones, blast the volume on, close your eyes ... you will repeat this song again and yet, again ... and will reach a high ...

"A Letter To Elise"

oh elise it doesn't matter what you say
i just can't stay here every yesterday
like keep on acting out the same
the way we act out
every way to smile
forget
and make-believe we never needed
any more than this
any more than this

oh elise it doesn't matter what you do
i know i'll never really get inside of you
to make your eyes catch fire
the way they should
the way the blue could pull me in
if they only would
if they only would
at least i'd lose this sense of sensing something else
that hides away
from me and you
there're worlds to part
with aching looks and breaking hearts
and all the prayers your hands can make
oh i just take as much as you can throw
and then throw it all away
oh i throw it all away
like throwing faces at the sky
like throwing arms round
yesterday
i stood and stared
wide-eyed in front of you
and the face i saw looked back
the way i wanted to
but i just can't hold my tears away
the way you do

elise believe i never wanted this
i thought this time i'd keep all of my promises
i thought you were the girl always dreamed about
but i let the dream go
and the promises broke
and the make-believe ran out...

oh elise
it doesn't matter what you say
i just can't stay here every yesterday
like keep on acting out the same
the way we act out
every way to smile
forget
and make-believe we never needed
any more than this
any more than this

and every time i try to pick it up
like falling sand
as fast as i pick it up
it suns away through my clutching hands
but there's nothing else i can really do
there's nothing else
i can really do
at all...
