I Will Follow You Into The Dark

I Will Follow You Into the Dark is the third single from Death Cab for Cutie's album Plans, an American indie pop rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. It is an acoustic ballad performed solo by frontman Ben Gibbard.

In this personally preferred alternative version of their music video, which was not aired on television, a picture-book takes up the center of the video frame and the pages turn as the song progresses. Within the book, two rabbits meet and fall in love. Time passes, possibly months or years, until one of the rabbits apparently dies over time. You will see some deeply profound and touching scenes where the rabbit saves the other from the rain and from drowning in the lake. There are also other references to death throughout the video, and the theme repeats itself such as a rotten bowl of fruit and the story of an elderly man who later dies, leaving his grandson all alone behind - mourning over his death on the horizon. The video ends with a picture of the earlier two rabbits together - perhaps depicting the immortality of their love, which we witnessed here.

The song was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. This is especially for you - far, far away ... you know who you are. I will follow you into the dark :)

Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding lights or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of the spark

If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me "Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me
Have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes
Are all worn down, the time for sleep is now
But it's nothing to cry about cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
I'll follow you into the dark.

I simply love the last two verses of the song. It's beautiful. And I liked the bit about how he never went back to the Catholic school. ;)
