Same Old Lang Syne

My earlier entry on "The Remains of the Day" rekindled an old beautiful song by Dan Fogelberg that seemed to suit this novel perfectly:

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.

The drink was empty and our tongues were tired,
And running out of things to say.
She gave a kiss to me as I got out,
And I watched her drive away.

Just for a moment I was back at school,
And felt that old familiar pain ...
And as I turned to make my way back home,
The snow turned into rain ...

  1. Salam,

the recent entries have rendered me speechless with its bittersweetness, dear thehoopoe...

I dunno why but right now, I feel that, sometimes, we glide through life, sometimes, we trudge... depending on the road we are travelling, the choice of route we have taken... but most importantly, how tight we hold on to His Rope...

    wallahu a'alam.

    wassalam.

  2. have you ideas how this life ends?
checked your hands and studied the lines?
have you the belief that the road ahead
    ascends off into the light?

you can spend your time alone
    redigesting past regrets,
    or you can,
    come to terms and realize
you're the only one who can forgive yourself
ah, makes more sense to live in the present tense

    ~present tense/pearl jam

we do not choose to come to being
but we can choose what we want to be
well that depends on what we do see
    and more,
    what we choose to see
    thinking, searching and navigating
God willing, we will get an understanding
love, it really is not about owning
it is a matter of feeling
so if you feel lost, you haven't lost anything
as long as there's hope and you keep believing...

  3. Salam,

"And hold fast, all together, by the Rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided" ... ali-Imran 3:103

Thank you for this reminder. Masya-Allah!

  4. "A Lament"

What is this "love" that everyone speaks about?
I have tasted Paradise and yet breathed in Hellfire
All in the name of "love" I thought
Someone please tell me as I am confused with ire

Is it a state of being?
Or is it a physical thing?
At times, it appears as white innocence
Yet at times, it is like a bitter medicine

I think I know it sometimes
Yet I go crazy at most times
"esprit" you seemed to know it
Pray show me the way to it
